Constitutional Conservatives Led Astray By Donald Trump

It is an amazing thing to watch Constitutional Conservatives – most of them professing Christians – abandon our foremost constitutional candidate, Ted Cruz, and jump on the bandwagon for the fascist populist, Donald Trump. Their claim is Ted Cruz is not a natural born citizen. To support their claim, they have lengthy videos on YouTube and thesis after thesis posted in blog after blog.

For the sake of argument, let’s just say the Ted Cruz birthers are correct and he is not legally eligible to be president: If so, this leaves every major candidate running for office, Republican and Democratic, openly defiant of the Constitution of the United States – there is no candidate we can uphold constitutionally. Then, which is the better compromise: to back a candidate who is defiant against God and Constitution – such as Donald Trump? or to back a candidate who is calling us to return to God and Constitution – such as Ted Cruz? I would propose, Ted Cruz is our best candidate even if he were constitutionally ineligible.

However, the argument for Ted Cruz’s natural born stratus is not lengthy nor is it complicated. Our Founding Fathers, in the First Congress gave us the definition of Natural Born Citizen – while the ratification of the Constitution was still fresh.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled, That any Alien being a free white person, who shall have resided within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States for the term of two years, may be admitted to become a citizen thereof on application to any common law Court of record in any one of the States wherein he shall have resided for the term of one year at least, and making proof to the satisfaction of such Court that he is a person of good character, and taking the oath or affirmation prescribed by law to support the Constitution of the United States, which Oath or Affirmation such Court shall administer, and the Clerk of such Court shall record such Application, and the proceedings thereon; and thereupon such person shall be considered as a Citizen of the United States. And the children of such person so naturalized, dwelling within the United States, being under the age of twenty one years at the time of such naturalization, shall also be considered as citizens of the United States. And the children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond Sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural born Citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been resident in the United States: Provided also, that no person heretofore proscribed by any States, shall be admitted a citizen as aforesaid, except by an Act of the Legislature of the State in which such person was proscribed. [United States Congress, “An act to establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization” (March 26, 1790; Sess. II, Chap. 3; 1 stat 103. 1st Congress) – emphasis added].

Ted Cruz meets this test. He was born in Canada, to a woman of US citizenship and to a man who had been resident in the United States for more than two years prior. Simple. Done. For this reason, he has survived every court challenge to his eligibility and he will continue to do so.

The bigger question is why professing Christians, evangelicals and the like, would abandon Biblical principles to endorse a man who would be king and defy God’s Laws. He has demonstrated contempt for our Constitution by his actions and statements on Eminent Domain and other such matters; he has professed contempt for God’s Laws by his support for abortion, Planned Parenthood and same-sex marriage; and he has declared he does not need repentance. My friends, listen, this is what is wrong with our nation: After 9/11, as a nation we chose to fight with pride – the Power of Pride – rather than repent and return to God – and this is why our nation has rapidly gone downhill since then and why we will soon be facing God’s wrath. As a nation, we feel no need to repent and we would elevate a man who has promised to make our nation Great Again. We have found our idol and it is us – our nation, our greatness, our prosperity.

Sure, the argument is we are not electing a minister. Granted that. However, if we want to keep our nation intact, it is important we elect men who are sensitive to our need to repent, follow God and lift up His Statutes. Our nation was founded by men who feared God. At the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Adams declared, “We have this day restored the Sovereign to whom all men ought to be obedient. He reigns in heaven, and from the rising of the sun, let His kingdom come.” After the Revolution of 1776, John Quincey Adams professed, “The highest glory of the American Revolution was this; it connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with principles of Christianity.” More could be said to confirm the faith of our founders, but it is important to note: Never did they establish a theocracy, so that argument is moot.

Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign staff coined the phrase, “It’s the economy, stupid.” Our nation bought it and we have not let it go. But the Great Experiment that became our nation was that a people came together and purposefully established a nation that would follow God’s Laws. Our freedoms are protected in our Constitution and in our Declaration of Independence we made clear these rights come from God. If our rights and freedoms come from God, then we have an obligation to obey His Laws. This was the Great Experiment and this is what made us great. Donald Trump wants you to believe he can make America great again – make us great without God. Again, we have found our idol and it is us – our nation, our greatness, our prosperity.

The Bible warns us to elect “men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe and place such men over the people.” [Exo 18:21]. And the prophet, Hosea, warned the people would face God’s wrath because they had ignored this principle. “They made kings but not through Me [God].” [Hos 8:4]. We are not calling for a minister but we are calling Constitutional Conservatives to return to the foundation: Our rights come from God and we are obligated to follow His Laws. Today, our laws call evil good and good evil (Isa 5:20) and if we do not repent and turn this around, we will soon face God’s wrath.

Ted Cruz has issued this call: a return to our Constitution and a return to God’s Laws. But we have professing Christians who oppose him and campaign for an arrogant, unrepentant fascist – a big government, business meddling, crony-capitalist. What happened to the popular evangelical theme: “If My people . . . humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways [repent]. . . (2Ch 7:14)? How do you expect God’s blessing when you endorse a man who defies Him? Alas and again, we have found our idol and it is us – our nation, our greatness, our prosperity.

God save our nation.
